BLIND AMBITION – All Good Things Must End CD-EP

For once, a Welsh quintet who seem to be more intent on producing Classic Rock than anything overtly nu-metal, and the result is this debut demo, superbly produced, arranged and played, exhibiting all the firepower of a small army.

They didn’t provide a track list, so let me say that the EP opens in a blaze of scorching lead guitar and dense guitar riffing over driving drums and punishing bass, as the vocalist enters with this gravelly voice that fits the steaming molten metal to a tee. The verses give rise to this huge anthemic chorus as the massive metal panorama continues its unstoppable path to classic rock glory, a soaring guitar lead scorching out of the speakers as the cyclical riffs and driving rhythms hurtle along, the song returning to dramatic effect as the vocalist really adds and chorus harmonies provide the icing on the enormous cake. Quite stunning!

The second track begins somewhat more sedately with a chiming guitar right out of Metallica’s "Nothing Else Matters" as a similarly brooding but differently arranged ballad begins – and ends – as a scorching guitar lead emerges from the depth, the rhythm section fire up and this mighty hurricane of metal erupts into life, this time the vocal more a mix of impassioned verses and huge-sounding hooks, the song itself excellently arranged for maximum driving impact, the effect so forceful, the track so addictive, nothing overblown, nothing wasted, and ending as it began – perfect!! Third track starts with their, by now, trademark grungy riffing as this time the rhythms rifle along twice as fast as before, the whole song tearing along on a whirlwind of riffs, rhythms and snarled, menacing, angry vocals, the whole thing sung with venom, but still sung and as superb a slice of angry metal mayhem as you’ll find. Then it surprises you by dropping back to a mid-section of supreme guitar driven elegance before diving upwards to end in a blast. Track 4 is a gorgeously strong acoustic ballad which proves that this band can deliver its songs stripped down, with strength and sensitivity, working a treat, particularly as a precursor for the final track which is the fastest and most powerful metal anthem on the CD so far, driving forward in a bvlitz of riffs, rhythms, lead guitars and vocals, and just the perfect way to end a stunningly strong EP.
