waddhya think... im going into the digital dj domain, i recon i have four choices and one or two bits and bobs complicating maters... lets start with the complications:
material:
most of my mp3's are of stuff with *i* (as apposed to everyone else) really like. stuff like keef baker and dire streights, its not a friendley mix and i cant exactally pull 'starsign' out of my arse when things get tough.
space:
my computer is a mac, my mac is a DAW first and formost, my DAW runs a *lot* of software, my software burdened DAW is very low on free space. As such i have no such l;uctury as a 5 gig mp3 collection as i need that space for session files and spectra (when im in a funney mood) thus any sidways moovment will need aditional storage
time > money:
time is all at a premium at the moment so even givin relitive financial security i would need to set ascide a good day to mp3 all the cd's i can picture myself using in that senario
whith all this in mind here are the options:
traktor £130:
its expensive overfeatured and totally over the top but part of me longs for the rediculous sophistication of the 'flagship' digital dj goo. also, NI are very very good at rewarding repeat custom with sick hard discounts, upgrades, crossgrades and all the world and his dog in fancey extras and demos.
Albeton live £nout:
live is live, its not really a dj tool but it could be used as such, the majour problem with with this senario is all import files require pre-processing to get them beatsunk and thus its not as quick as i would like.
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/audio/discoxt.html: about £10:
simple, cheep, effective, shiney, and intogrates well with my itunes library (which unfortunitaly dosent intograte well with removable storage.. sif.) ill bet it will be all coco with drag and drop and all sorts.... but is it difficult enough to justify my thirst for 1337ness.
Reactor £nout:
reactor dosent get enough use, and with a fairley minimal ammount of fiddle i could build a dj software system. the problems are that its a version off being universally compatible with the intel system and as such i just cant be 100% sure it will be stable in the face of a hectick deeeejay set
well i think ill look into the reactor and ableton solutions first as they are free. It remains to be seene that i wont be leaving my CD's at home for a good few years yet.
