What the &^@ do we know - Quantum Physics & String Theory

I' just finished viewing "What the bleep do we know?"

Overall I don't like it.

The filmmaking is very similar to "The Secret", which deals with the "Law of Attraction", whearas WTBDWK deals with Quantum Physics, Neurology and theology. And I like the main actress. In fact its kind of odd because just this afternoon I saw the most recent "My Name is Earl" episode, and Earl falls in love with the beautiful deaf lady with the 'sexy' accent. So It was surprising to see her show up again.

Here's where I have a problem with it, and I believe it's only because of personal preference and has nothing to do with inherent flaws in the fundamental concepts of this piece.

The movie uses Quantum Physics, and Neural Physics as analogous situations for someone's own life, in this case the Deaf photographer whos life is falling apart. Where I get offended is there are a lot of heady concepts, based on science with NO SCIENTIFIC proofing of the concepts. This is of course to cater to the "lay person" but I feel it cheapens the entire feel of this highly intelligent piece and the well educated persons interviewed.

For instance the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle!

How hard would it be to flash this on the screen to validate the scientific notions presented?

One of the fundamental laws of science is, if a theory or concept cannot be PROVED, then it is not science, it is a philosophy.

I feel the accompanying quantum calculations should have at least been mentioned, or at least shown on the screen to satisfy the notion that YES this is indeed true.

Now another documentary which I feel is FAR superior to this and the secret would be Brian Greene's "Elegant Universe" (Based on his book of the same name) this 3 hour Nova piece created for PBS a few years ago, deals with the new quantum physics field of "String Theory." and Einsteins Theory of General Relativity (E=MC2) as a base for the genesis of String theory.

String Theory stipulates that atoms, neutrons, and electrons are NOT the smallest forms of matter in the universe. But that these and EVERYTHING else in the universe is composed of even SMALLER vibrating strings, which vibrate in the corresponding frequencies in order to make everything!

.

Take a peek at the elegant universe here (The entire doc is linked at the bottom of this blog)

And all this (or atleast most) is backed up by HARD science showing that these outrageous theories are in fact reality. Or atleast scientists who have the matematical postulations, and equations proving their theories to be true.

But where this gets REALLY interesting, is where using these new theories it makes the possibility of Time-Travel, Teleportation, and even alternate dimensions a very real aspect of the world atleast on the subatomic level.

I have the DVD and watch it from time to time with new audiences, when I want to give them a good mind fuck (usually just makes them fall asleep).

The entire Elegant Universe 3 Part Nova Series is available ONLINE. Here! Take a look!

It is very likely the most amazing thing I have ever seen in my life and is very eye opening, and even makes me wish I was studying Quantum Physics so I could be with all the other legions of people now getting into the new exciting field of String Theory.

Well, it's still debated as to whether the postulations of String Theory are an actual fact, so it might be a touch premature to make statements such as "And all this (or atleast most) is backed up by HARD science showing that these outrageous theories are in fact reality".

Still, very nice blog. A good read . I remember watching The Elegant Universe (or perhaps it was just something with the same guy in it) a while ago. It's always interesting but sometimes a shame when they explain things in a bit too much of a 'dumbed down' way.
