I have to confess right now that I am one of those English people who hates other English people, particularly the ones who think speaking loudly and clearly solves every problem.
This is an example of just how wrong they are.

Today I went to the Safari Park with my Mother, and we stopped off in their restaurant for a coffee. The girl in front of me in the queue was deaf; it was obvious she was deaf because she wasn't speaking, was pointing to what she wanted, and was signing to her friends.

The woman working the till somehow missed this, and treated the girl like she was stupid; a two minute job of ordering some drinks was torturously dragged out into this poor girl being made the centre of attention.

The till woman spoke to the girl slowly and loudly, and kept sighing dramatically and coming round to the other side of the till to 'make things clearer'. The girl ordered a fizzy drink, and pointed to the Coca-Cola logo on the front of the machine, and the till woman poured her a lemonade because thats what lever was on her side of the till where the girl had pointed. The girl tried to explain she wanted coke, and the woman's answer was "well, I did say lemonade" She looked to us for confirmation, but not finding it she heaved another sigh and began marching around the till aain.

By this point I was ready to scream at this woman, but it was a public place so I yelled instead.
I made the girl's order very clear to her, then helped the girl - who politely thanked me - carry her stuff back, because she just wanted to get away from the horrible woman.

I put in a complaint, because I found the whole thing so offensive it was unbelieveable.
I can understand a lack of training, but even he manager confirmed that staff had been trained to deal with differently abled customers.

Arrrgh.
Angst.

Thanks for doing the right thing and helping the deaf girl.  You did everything right except kick the till girl in the face.

As a mute, I can only say thank you.  The number of times people treat me like I am stupid because I can't speak is incredible....although strangely, when I am abroad in Europe people think I am English, not stupid...They would be correct...
