I'm currently doing a series of drawing experiments. Not for prep. work for paintings but as a tool to focus my hand and mind on possible drawing/painting marks to use to illustrate the drama and movement of the subject. All of these "desire" drawings take between 5 and 10 mins.
Like the paintings I will do this year, the drawings are created from the mind, with no life models or reference material used. The reason I develop the image from my imagination, is to produce original images, letting the accidental marks dictate how the image develops. I don't worry about anatomical correctness or creating a realistic image, as long as the drama of movement comes across.
The easiest way to describe how I approach this work is consider what we can do when we look at clouds: The ability the mind has to create images from some very basic shapes. This is how I'm approaching the drawings: I just lay down some random marks and carry on drawing until it reaches the stage of being a recognisable image with the least amount of true representation.
