I thought I would use some of my unfinished paintings to demonstrate my painting processes. A more detailed blog will be posted if I ever get the time! All the paintings will undergo many changes, so their current states may not be a true reflection of what the finished works will look like.
I laid down a base color of red paint. Once this was dry I over-painted the area with a coat of yellow paint. Whilst this was still wet I used my fingers and the end of a brush to scratch out the image. I will use this image as a sketch to build up into the finished painting.
This is a painting done on watercolour paper. It is purely used to play around with the paint to see what images develop. I used my fingers to move the paint around: I think that the marks which have been left gives an indication of the movement within the room.
This is a more finished painting. Because of this, some key elements have been worked out. Basically it’s a room within a room (peep show?). The outer room (yellow area) is where the spectator is – their shadow cast on the wall. The couple are within the inner chamber. At this stage I’m not too worried about having the correct colours and the shape/form of the figures will undergo a lot more changes.
Now the colour placements have been worked out, I now need to re-establish the “drawing” marks using black enamel paint, so that the painting returns to a more sketch state.
This is the start of the first major painting. I have laid down a base colour using household paint: This allows for a more flat & uniformed area of colour – a decorator’s roller was used to aid this. Once the background was dry I put down the first marks of the couple using black enamel paint. These marks are random – no sketch, models or photos were used to generate these marks.
I have now started to lay down the base colours of the couple. Once I’m satisfied with the colours I will re-establish the original black drawing marks.

A complicated process! But, looking at your finished work, well worth the effort!
