Ladies and gentlemen, what do think about the ads on trig.com?

I dont really like ads, but most sites on the web uses it and Im used to it. Here on trig.com a *lot* users have made complaints about it, why is it so? In what way do you think ads are affecting trig.com or your profile? Does somebody like the ads?

Would love to get some feedback on this!

Thanks,
Kristian

I don't like ads in general - but I understand the reasoning behind them.  No one is forcing me to click on them, and, per Jonas' bulletin this is not the refined version of the ad system, so maybe it will be less visually invasive once the final roll out is done.

I'm sure we would all love an ad free trig, but what is the option?  Subscription service? And how much would you be happy to pay?

If the ads keep this forum of expression open to everyone - they have to be.

ads would be fine if they held relevant information that actually wasn't spam  or ads about who's taller or find true love. Why not use the INDIE click network or find ads that give us valuable info related to music, current trends, arts and events? Nothing more annoying that dating ads and "are you scared?" banners!! Sell advertising to labels or digital companies to promote new releases. Offer a promotional budget for artists on trig. There are plenty of ways to generate income without nonsense info being blasted to us.

You know the pattern holds and gets repeated everywhere: something new and interesting is offered for free, becomes popular, and the next thing you know little, subtle (commercial) changes begin cropping up.  The idea is to appeal to folks, build up a loyal following, and then pimp it.  No one is saying this isn't workable way to turn a penny: I'm just saying its the point where I get THE FUCK out.  Online social networks have become popular because we're social animals  We like playing with each other.  Its just sad when someone walks into the sandbox and shoves a "Buy My Shit" sticker next to us.  Fuck that business.  These adds continue and I leave trig for good (because deleting my profile can't actually be done?).

Hey!  The banner at the top of my page bothers me the most.  I find it visually distracting, and just downright irritating!  Not being the most creative person on the  planet I have really enjoyed playing with the new skin generator, but now my profile is mucked up with this 'thing' at the top   I understand the nned for some ads, but would really like them to be as unobtrusive as possible and relevent to my life.  Other ideas as to ad content have been offered up and they sound good to me.  This is an artists forum...lets keep the ads directed towards that!!

Thanks

I think it is a combination of the two - right now the ads are of no relevance to me (I understand that is something that is being worked on) and they are visually intrusive - animated, garish colours....a text ad pertaining to an artists supply shop in Finland - I'd probably have a look - an animated ad for online poker makes me run away and switch off....

And another thing, trig has slowed up considerably since the ads appeared - I know  I don't have the worlds greatest connection but one of the great things about trig has always been it's clean lines and the ability for it to load easily and quickly, I didn't notice a difference when people started creating their own skins, but with the ads there is a noticeable slowdown.  Right now I just have empty space at the top of my browser window as the ad isn't loading - it is too much for my (allegedly) broadband connection.

I have noticed the slowdown as well.  I've also noticed the ads interferring with the changing of skins...maybe it's just me?  I know of at least one other person who finds her load time increased, and thus her trig pleasure is diminished.  Not everyone is up to date with zippy computer gear.

The slowdown is related to something else, which we have sorted now. We're doing our best to not let it happen again

Well...when last the codes at the bottom of the page are ad codes...and they slow the complete load of the page....I'm just sayin'.    BTW I do appreciate all the hard work you guys put in to keep my trig-life afloat ;-)

I think I'm glad I installed ad-blocker!

They could at least go at the bottom of the pages instead of the top. They ruin my lovely header and those of people like leenstar, kiri, ryn...
nice well designed headers spoiled by hideous flashing nonsense.

And on a slower computer than this one (I'm currently on a Mac but also use a PC) they just take longer to load.

I agree, SarahB.

Locating the banner across the top is not the best location visually nor practically - I have my screen set at 1440 x 900 and my browser window is maybe 900 wide (I have to have space for my work somewhere ) : when you consider the address bar and tabs at the top of my screen and then the advert and then the profile header....there is not much room for content in the browser window....so I have no option but to scroll straight past the advert to see the profile content.

I also think that the ads are a great idea, even if they look like crap at the moment..anything to keep trig going! and i dont get people that want to leave just because there's ads here now.. its not like you joined trig and stayed here just because it was the only place online that didnt have ads.. you stayed cause the people here are awesome. stop whining! grr!

The ads don't really bother me at all, although I'm surprised that music related ads aren't showing up more.  I agree that private ad sales to bands/record labels/online stores would make more sense, but I understand that ad networks will provide a steady flow of income.

Also to whoever said they will leave if the ads continue is pretty ridiculous.. it's pretty tough to find a website on the net that doesn't have some form of advertising on it.. including all search engines.  so asking a rapidly growing social networking site to run with a negative cash flow is actually sort of greedy.

one of the reasons that the banners are at the top is because there is a much greater chance of someone clicking it. Trig will make a small income if no one clicks just because of page views alone, but if people click the ads (which they probably aren't right now because of the nature of the ads) then trig will start pulling in a better income, and will be able to invest more money into the site to fix all the other issues that people have.

As long as trig doesn't end up looking like myspace then i think everything will be ok!

For me the ad at the top is something I am scrolling past without even looking at, it just takes up too much screen space and is so slow loading that I am past it before it shows up......which negates the point of the ad...

Anyways, the reason I have popped back to this thread is the fact that people are mentioning ads with noise - hopefully they won;t stay...I need quiet browsing when "working" y'see....anyways....off to work now :-)

I've got ten bucks that says that our little friend that decided to leave probably has either a Myspace or a Facebook account and I think that is just HILARIOUS.

Dumb people.  Sheesh.

I'll echo what Mike B said ... if we gotta have ads let's have them but right now they totally deface trig's awesome design, a promo budget for bands on trig is something we would definitely be into, (how about custom pages ?) we've bought ads in facebook but we'd rather invest our hard earned money here ...

ads are necessary for the survival and growth of any website but as I stated earlier, there are plenty of advertising options relevant to the users and "artists" on trig, from other artists big and small buying ad space to music stores , current events, independent clothing shops etc.. The worse thing Trig could do is allow ads that myspace displays and we all know how fucking dreadful and irrelevant those ads are!

What is Trig?

trig.com. A community for creative people with images, blogs, music, trends, etc. Yeah, we could say all that. But what we really imagine is a place where people like their music loud, their opinions edgy and their life brave.
