BRIXTON ACADEMY REVIEW IN KERRANG!

KKKK (that means great)

When Good Charlotte first headlined Brixton Academy nearly four years ago, they were just kids. Kids that were taking on the world. Kids that were no more confident in their own skin than those stood before them. Kids that had no idea how long their success would continue. Their breakthrough album ‘The Young and The Hopeless’ would go on to sell millions, but the failure of its successor ‘The Chronicles of Life and Death’ to maintain such high figures left some pondering whether the bubble was about to burst. As such, tonight is their biggest test yet. Having released their bravest and most diverse record to date ‘Good Morning Revival’ this is their chance to show the entire world that they are indeed a band worth caring about.

As the lights go down and the band appear in single file to near hysteria, ploughing jubilantly through opener ‘Misery’ and inciting a venue-wide jumping fit seconds later, any fear of tonight being anything other than a triumph is rendered utterly inconceivable. And with that begins a night of celebration, underpinned by a joyous sense of occasion and performed with the confidence of a band re-inventing themselves before our eyes. It’s a confidence that’s shown in their readiness to blast through old favourites like ‘The Anthem’, ‘Girls & Boys’ and the recent super-hit ‘Keep Your Hands Off My Girl’ inside the first five songs. It’s shown in their readiness to spend time joking with both themselves and the crowd without fear of losing interest or momentum. And it’s a confidence utterly justified in the deafening response that greets both the chorus and conclusion of every single song. When the likes of ‘The River’ and the ever-familiar ‘Lifestyles Of The Rich and Famous’ are wheeled out the cheer volume and passion thrown back at them is remarkable, and it’s ultimately the crowd themselves that give the best indication of exactly where Good Charlotte and headed. Sure, there are kids here that may well grow older and leave them behind, just as there are punters that clearly have no interest in anything other than “that song off the radio”. but there are also people wearing shirts from that very first headline stint. People that have made the transition into adulthood alongside the band rather than casting them aside. Four years ago the chances of Good Charlotte still playing venues of this magnitude today were unknown. The chances of them being here four years from now are almost certain.

FRONTLINE
HOW WAS IT FOR YOU?

Joel Madden:
“All of the shows in the UK on this tour have been fun, but tonight was really special. The reception that both the new record and the shows have been getting awesome. I guess it almost feels like a revival of sorts. It’s really nice.”

Benji Madden:
“Tonight was possibly the most fun London she we’ve played so far, at least for me personally. I’ve got a lot of good memories of our shows at The Garage, Mean Fiddler and our earlier Brixton shows, but tonight was definitely really good.”
