Tour for Cancer

Group Info

Group Description

As cancer continues to dominate the leading causes of death by disease in the US & UK, Find the Cure recognises major organisations devoted to finding a cure in the near future. While our medium of support may vary, our objective remains: to foster a public awareness of cancer in its multiple forms and an appreciation for cancer-research and support teams within National hospitals. Our initiatives taget the youth audience to actualise their potential in the fight against cancer through their passion for music.

Self Breast Examination

One out of every seven women face breast cancer diagnosis during their lifetime.
Breast Self Exams start with a visual exam. Look in a mirror and ask yourself the following questions: Do my breasts look and feel the same? Is one breast larger or smaller than the other? Are my nipples the same shape? Are there any indentations, bruises, or bulges? Are the veins more noticeable on one breast than the other?

Step One
Lie down with a rolled towel under your shoulder and the outer side of your breast. Use the tips of the first four fingers of your opposite hands.

Step Two
Move the 4 fingers together in 5 pence-sized circles. Do 3 circles - light, medium, and deeper pressure before moving your fingers to the next spot.

Step Three
Examine the entire breast area from your breast bone to below your breast, all the way across to your armpit.

Step Four
Starting at your breast bone, work your way down your breast and back up. Your last line will be up your side just below the outer edge of your breast, finishing under your armpit.

Step Five
When you're done with the touch test, gently squeeze your nipple. You are looking for any discharge or pain. Some women normally have breast tenderness around the time of their period. Remember, you are looking for something different than what you find normal. Do this once every month to become familiar with your body and what you find normal. When is the best time to do a breast exam? Ten days after your period when tenderness and swelling are low. If you notice any changes, see your doctor right away. Testicle Self Examination

Testicular cancer is not that common. Out of every 1,000 cancers diagnosed in men, only 14 are testicular cancers. But it is the commonest cancer affecting young men between 20 and 39 years old. Almost half of all testicular cancers occur in men under 35 years old, while only about 1 in 7 (14%) are diagnosed in men over 50 years. Treatment for testicular cancer is very effective and the vast majority of patients are cured.

Cancers which are found early are the most easily treated.
The best way to check for testicular cancer is to examine yourself once a month. A good time to do this is after a warm bath or shower, when the scrotal skin is relaxed.
Hold your scrotum in the palms of your hands, so that you can use the fingers and thumb on both hands to examine your testicles.
Note the size and weight of the testicles. It is common to have one testicle slightly larger, or which hangs lower than the other, but any noticeable increase in size or weight many mean something is wrong.
Gently feel each testicle individually. You should feel a soft tube at the top and back of the testicle. This is the epididymis which carries and stores sperm. It may feel slightly tender. Don't confuse it with an abnormal lump.
You should be able to feel the firm, smooth tube of the spermatic cord which runs up from the epididymis.
Feel the testicle itself. It should be smooth with no lumps or swellings. It is unusual to develop cancer in both testicles at the same time, so if you are wondering whether a testicle is feeling normal or not you can compare it with the other.

Remember - if you do find a swelling in your testicle, make an appointment and have it checked by your doctor as soon as possible. The single most important tool for surviving breast cancer is early detection, so practice early prevention. Protect your health. Prevent cancer. The Cure is Knowledge.
