Compliments

This is maybe the hardest parts to write since some compliments can be understood as abuse and vice versa. A simple rule of thumb is:
If it is short and shyly muttered under the breath almost inaudibly - it is an compliment. If it is fluent avalanche of pretty sounding words spoken in eye-bulging wrath, full with flames of hell in the background, ending With punctuation line. - it is abuse
(or might be that Finland just lost their 3-0 lead in World Cup Hockey finals against Sweden. In any case proceed with caution!)

See, it is easy!

A word of warning: We Finns are helpless against compliments, we have no defence mechanism against those. So we compliment sparingly. Some Finn might point out:

Hyvä työ/mies/nainen ei kiitosta kaipaa! = Good work/man/woman doesn't need praise!

I say BS! We tend to be shamed by the good feelings kind words bring to us and try to turn a cold spot to people who praise us! But playing cool never works.

Just compliment ruthlessly, but with few words. Try to use precision more than amount. Any Finn will melt with few good placed lines.
Just be honest. If we spot a ass kisser it is bye bye forever.

Something basic and formal:
MUKAVA NÄHDÄ/TAVATA SINUA = Pleasant to see/meet you

Something daring:
TOSI KIVA NÄHDÄ (SINUA), TÄSSÄ ON MUN HUONEEN NUMERO/PUHELINNUMERO = Really nice to see (you), Here is my room number/phone number

Something uplifting. To get the most likely one uttered from Finnish mouth skip all the text in parenthesis:
(SINÄ) OLET (TYRMÄÄVÄN/USKOMATTOMAN) KAUNIS (TÄNÄÄN/TÄNÄ ILTANA) = (You) are (stunningly/unbelievably) beautiful (today/this evening)

Careful with this one. It is a girlish thing to say:
(OLET/OOT/SOOT) IHANA = (You're) lovely/Sweet

Some important words:
MUKAVA, KIVA = Pleasant, Nice
TOSI,TODELLA = Truth/Truly, Really/Truly
KAUNIS,NÄTTI/SIEVÄ,KOMEA,TYRMÄÄVÄ,SEKSIKÄS = Beutiful,Pretty,Handsome,Stunning,Sexy
SULOINEN,SOMA,SÖPÖ,IHANA = Sweet,Cute,Lovely
HYVÄN NÄKÖINEN = Good looking
MILETÖN, ÄLYTÖN = Mindless
MILETTÖMÄN, ÄLYTTÖMÄN = Mind-numbinly,Mindlessly
USKOMATON = Unbelivable
USKOMATTOMAN = Unbelivably

If things turn out nicely:
(MINÄ) PIDÄN/TYKKÄÄN SINUSTA = (I) like you

If she/he is really crazy:
SINÄ OLET/SÄ OLET/SÄ OOT/SOOT/OOT (AIVAN) ÄLYTÖN/MIELETÖN! = You are one (really) crazy sonofabitch! / You are (really) great!

Testosterone counterparts:
VITTU, (SINÄ OLET/SÄ OLET/SÄ OOT/SOOT/OOT) ÄIJÄ! = Fuck, (you are/you're) a Man/Guy/Dude! or Fuck Dude!
No this is not a result of hangover panic finding something unpleasant in the bed. It's actually a manifestation of camaraderie and respect. Not much of these spoken sober!

And the simplest of all Masculine praises:
PERKELE! = You are man to walk the mountains, the one I could trust my life with. I am speechless! *Hand heavily slapped against shoulder*

Something to say to insane friends:
VITUN PÖLJÄ/PÖLIJÄ/PÖSSI = Fucking idiot (You are fucking insane)

Praise for females:
VÄHÄN/VÄHÄNKÖ OOT KISSA/KAUNIS = You are/aren't you little bit of cat/beautiful (You are/Aren't you foxy/beautiful)

Praise for males:
VÄHÄN/VÄHÄNKÖ SE ON (KUUMA) SONNI/KOLLI = He is/isn't he little bit of (hot) bull/tomcat (He is/isn't he a (hot) stallion)

Play with these and have a ball!

Somehow this part feels like it needed some of your input. Post a phrase you want to see here, and I'll editit in if it fits the theme.

I'm loving this, its awesome to get to learn another language.  Although some help with pronunciation would be good!  Would it be too much to ask if I asked you to break down the words phonetically so that we can better understand how to speak it correctly??

Once again thanks for an awesome idea!

    Much love, Bree xo.

Well, since Finnish men have no game and have NOT A CLUE on how to flirt (true story, and a conversation I've had with many Finnish men and women) TÄSSÄ ON MUN HUONEEN NUMERO/PUHELINNUMERO is probably the more common phrase heard in Finnish pubs.
