Various theories exist about the identity of Mary from Magdala or Mary Magdalene. Some believe that she was a repentant prostitute from whom Christ exorcized seven demons, was present and wept at the crucifixion of the Messiah and later testified about His resurrection. Others believe she was Jesus's forbidden lover who seduced Him and produced descendants. Make no mistake about this Mary Magdalan, this original band from Hollywood is not coming to prove anything, their only mission is to show the darkest corners inside the mind of an addict.
JUNKIE LOVE
The idea behind the project is Mary and her life that has not been easy, after being moved away from her parents (both heroin abusers) she was taken to live with her grandparents . There she suffered more losses. Her aunt (who was like a second mother) was involved in a shooting but didn't die, remaining in a vegetative state. In the same year, her mother died from an overdose. After all this, Mary was no longer the same. Her only refuge was drugs. "The nights of partying in the hills became days locked and barricaded inside my closet" till finally, considering her lifestyle, she decided she would NOT be a continuation of her mother, and she exchanged her syringes for music.
HEROIN KILLS
Looking for a way to be "clean", she met DJ Gzus H., and his bad reputation and his musical talent united them. One painful recovery and the addition of the guitarist Ericb put everything in motion; the name was logical.
The sound of the band is something very particular, a strange combination of Pantera, though not as elaborate, and Cypress Hill, though more hard. The beats of the turntable and the bass lines impart a dynamism to the song and for moments we are reminded of Dr.Dre and Public Enemy on stage and very furious. The guitar is in charge, and takes it to the limit between the rapper and the metal; while the distortion sharpens, the chords are able to give and blend with the voice, the principal ingredient, something similar to the devil suffocating in acid, a combination of power and ferocity, yet with a feminine touch that only a voice which has tasted the honeys of hell can offer. It's too simple to be metal, too much guitar to be hiphop, and too much life to be new-metal.
The attitude is greater than the trio; they prove this in their presentations where the instruments fly in the air and smash against the floor and they themselves enjoy what they get back from this process. "The band is more than just a history of my life over the last 10 years, there is alot of emotion but without being emo; many feelings, honesty. When I am onstage, I share myself with the public, and the energy and the attitude comes from that. We try to give them something real."
Although the recurrent themes are the extreme consumption of illegal substances, without being optimistic, there is a true message and meaning in her music, and whatever you might think of a chick like Mary, she isn't into exploiting her image. "For me, music is made with talent - not because of your body or how famous you are. I don't want to be THE most sexy metal chick, I want to be one of the most entertaining chicks in metal, I don't want the focus on my body, I want the focus on my voice. I'm not saying I'm not an attractive woman, but I believe getting recognition that way is too easy ."
The power of myspace
These Californians don't have an album or CD out with sales that could attest to their popularity, but their myspace is one of the most-visited sites, receiving 500,000 "hits" and almost 1,000,000 plays which already counts as a success with their fan base, whom they call Junkies and their street team which they have named the Crucifix Mafia.
