The band's first incarnation (named Area51) was founded in 2000 by Martin, Tarek and Sivi. They were inspired by legendary metal band Metallica and other musicians that haven't left them even nowadays. After plenty of concerts, e.g. at Berlin's Kesselhaus ("A Tribute to Kurt Cobain"), in the Knaack club at their "School Jam!" contest and other rock competitions, as well as at Toy Run Festival, after several studio sessions and line-up changes, they officially announced in June 2005 that Area51 would split up.

After summer break, in 2005, the big search for a new style of music and line-up began, the latter because some members of the old band weren't interested in further collaboration for privat or musical reasons. To expand on sound possibilities, an additional guitar was added to the band, and the musically versatile and melodically creative band MATRE was born. In 2006, the band rehearsed a lot and played their first gigs. Meanwhile, the bassist decided to leave the band due to his upcoming year abroad.

A new one was looked for and found soon enough before the former left: Maurice. After half a year, MATRE had their last gig (at the Postbahnhof's "Schools Out" Festival) with the old bassist and welcomed that year's very hot summer with arms wide open. After highly inspiring vacations and full of new ideas, MATRE started up again with their new band member and packed schedule. Several concerts (e.g. at Tommy Weissbecker Haus, the K17 club as supporting act and) later, after winning the rock music competition in the Fuchsbar, MATRE went into the studio to record new songs.

More gigs and new material are being worked on.
