Melody makers from the Baltic shores
Mild is an Estonian acoustic rock group which was formed by two high school pals from Tallinn in 1999. They started the band even before they even knew it. Music was something that just made them two click. At first it was Oasis, then it was The Rolling Stones, then Mild and then mixture of these last two flavoured with a bit of U2.
If you have any idea how sounds a cheap soviet time broken acoustic guitar, then you know how much will and passion for music you must have to overcome the sound it creates. They used to spend hours and hours in each other`s livingrooms to find out what the other one has managed to write down. Now, rehearsals in a cold school hall, shitty instruments and bla bla bla - this is not what you really want to know, isn`t it? The facts are the ones that count!
In spring 2002 Mild released their song Sunday as a debut radio single. It was a success for a young band since it was playlisted on the most important mainstream radio in the country and received airplays on other stations as well. One star-dj even said in his morning program that „Sunday is the best song an Estonian band has written in a long time”.
In december 2004 they released Why under Microphone Records, beautiful and heartmelting rock ballad which received high chart positions in Latvian stations SWH and Rietumu and in Estonian Radio 2 (went straight to #1). It was the first Estonian-Latvian joint single with Ian Greenwald from BTH sharing the lead vocals. Other collaborations included known Estonian musicians Ivo Etti and Jakko Maltis.
In January 2006 Station In Your Life was delivered to radio stations in all three Baltic countries. It ended up on Latvian hit music compilation 100% Svaigs 9, on Estonian Radio 2 it was playlisted for months and it was exploited on prime time TV shows.
But before Sunday, Why or Station, there was a song called My Life. It was their first decent recording and they managed to enter the legendary Estonian television music chart show „7 braves” with it and get supporting commentaries from the hottest rock act in Estonia at that time, Claire`s Birthday. Of course the guys were boosted to 7th heaven for a while.
Mild has been the winner of the two most important "the best young band" awards in Estonia. The first victory was so unexpected that they still try to forget what they said accepting the award, the second one was even more unexpected because only one of them cared to show up at the award ceremony and believe it or not - it was the bassist. Does it show that they don`t give a shit? No, rather it shows that they can be highly critical about themselves and that not always have they thought they have given their very best onstage.
Mild has been co-operating and been the artist of a very nice Latvian record label, Microphone Records (licencee of EMI / Virgin) since 2003 which has turned into something special over these years.
Mild was the first Estonian band to take part in a chart project called Prieksnams TV which later grew into a pan-baltic new music chart where 10 Estonian groups figured in 2005/2006 chosen by the singer of Mild.
The singer of the band was the first one among the baltic musicians to start spreading the message of human rights and it was not so sexy then. After the Live For Amnesty charity concert he has organized 4 years in a row and where some of the leading Estonian artists have performed, it might have reached a point where you`d say, well - I guess my life is not so screwed up after all, I really can sign the petition to lift the hope of the hopeless or even give back them their lives.
Mild has charmed many people throughout the years, the young, the old, the middle-aged (saying that with no irony whatsoever). Mild has also pissed off some of you out there but now really, do you think we really give a fuck?
In the first place, Mild has always been about camaraderie, a couple of guys enjoying each other`s company, silly jokes and music they can make, together as one. And only then comes the urge to make people smile or cry - depends on the occasion - and entertain them as best as we can.
For the great finale! Years ago after a concert where everything that had to go wrong, went wrong and we were walking home, not unhappy though since we managed to light up the audience anyways, one guy screamed on the other side of the quiet street in the old town of Tallinn, in front of a five star hotel, "Mild super!" - at first we thought he was a little drunk but now we know - he just got the point.

Believe it or not, the band is 8 years old already. To be honest, I am still as excited as I was 9 or 10 years ago when I got my first guitar - being in this band is as good as I always thought it would be.
