How to respond?

Yes, this is another blog with me having a moan.

Today my moan is about two-faced gossiping and bitching in the work place.

It's really starting to grate on me. The levels of two-facedness at my work are unbelievable - it's worse than being back at school... Everyone seems to be bitching about someone else... I find it highly uncomfortable and am starting to get annoyed by it. I like to think I'm quite a laid back person and it takes a lot to piss me off. Or if something does piss me off I keep quiet - It will actually take a hell of a lot to make me confront something or someone... Anyway, I have been keeping out of the bitching and when someone is telling me about someone else I just nod and go "ok then". But it's starting to get to the stage where I may have to change tactics and just say "I'd rather not talk about this" The whole thing is getting silly. For example, today, there were three of us working together and one went to the toilet. They hadn't been away for more than ten seconds before I was confronted with "Is 'so-and-so' not driving you mad yet?" They do this and that every time we work together. My response was "No, we get on fine" Which is true, I get on with everyone at work ok and yes, they do sometimes do things to piss me off, but it's nothing big enough that I 'd actually even consider wasting my breath talking to the others about . I'm doing my best to try and stay out of the bitching and I don't want to cause any offense but I'm sick of hearing it... If it was something about the way a person was doing their job I could maybe understand it more, but this is not like that... And don't go thinking it's a girl thing, I work with more guys than girls and the boys are just as bad.

So where do I stand? Is listening to this just as bad as being involved myself?

I think that it is hard to totally avoid this kind of thing - it happens everywhere, in every work place to some extent.  I think it would be good to turn the conversation around and move it in a positive direction, possibly not by saying "I'd rather not talk about this." because I could see someone taking that to mean you disagree, agree, take someone else's side....maybe by talking over the initial comment with something like "Did you see such and such in the newspaper this morning?"

I honestly don't know if it is possible to stop this kind of thing - I think it is quite "human" and you can't stop it - not paying attention may well stop people talking such shite in front of you which will reduce the amount of shite going on....
