The Ladies Room

By:  Sheila Santiago

What happened to the days when men were "dirty pigs" and women were "dainty angels?"

This new column will be dedicated to the many women out there who have taken the place of the "dirty pigs" and help remind us how cleanliness is something we have forgotten.

Every day I'm faced with the horror of going to the restroom in public and/or at work.

I find it more disturbing at work than I do in public because these people are here every day and share the restroom with people they see more often than their own families.

Just because it isn't your home - where you know if you don't clean it no one else will - doesn't mean it's okay to leave the stall looking like a pig was killed there or like it is the place to collect horse manure for fertilization. Yes, it gets that bad and no it isn't the next person's job to come in after you and clean up or flush the toilet. Just because the toilet has an automatic flusher doesn't mean it will always work; that's why the flush button is still there.

I walk into this nightmare every time I have to use the restroom and I have seen enough and continue to see enough to know something needs to change here, so I thought I'd start sharing excerpts from my book on the subject.  Hopefully, I will reach people out there and make them realize how disgusting this behavior is and to make women soul-search for the reasons why they feel they are too good to wipe off the seat, flush the toilet or, for God sakes, pick up the feminine napkins they drop when trying to get it in that little box on the stall wall, instead of leaving them there for the next person to see and have nightmares about.

These experiences in the Ladies room are not just about the fall of common sense and cleanliness but also about the way the restroom has turned into something more than a place where you just went to relieve yourself of bodily fluids. The Ladies room has become a whole other world, especially at work and out in clubs. The ladies room seems to serve a different purpose in each environment, we will explore them here.

Now that I have given this introduction, please read my monthly submissions and pass along to those women whom you know need to read this. Take these words with you and if you don't think you are one of these women prove me wrong - next time you are in the restroom do not make a pig of yourself and of women everywhere. We need to get back to a day when cleanliness was next to godliness ladies.

These are my stories, nightmares and adventures from The Ladies room.

Chapter 1

What's behind door number 5?  6??  7????  It's like playing a game of Russian roulette with the stalls, you know behind one of them you will find the bullet or as I like to call it "the mother load," but you have to try them all before you find one decent enough to use.

It's scary sometimes … you walk into the restroom and see the cleaning crew hasn't been there since the last time you were there. You push the door as you peek in to see if it is safe. You stand back away from the door as if something is going to jump out and contaminate you. You hold your breath - ready to run. The first two stalls are usually a battle zone and my inspiration for my articles.

You walk down the line of stalls, past the occupied stall and finally find one not so bad and make sure to cover the seat and get out of there as fast as possible. You hear the other person finish, get up and walk out. They do not flush or wash their hands and they could care less.

The automatic flusher doesn't always work and requires half a second to turn around and press the button, but how many people really do it?

What goes through a person's head as they piss all over the seat, walk out of the stall and don't even think about wiping up the mess? Are they thinking at all?  This is why I use the phrase "dirty pig" even though a pig in all actuality is much cleaner than a human. It's actually an insult to a pig to compare these women to them and to the pigs on all the farms around the world I apologize.

It's a strong phrase but it has to be said. I will not downplay the disgusting nature of the situation.

Take it upon yourself to take the lead in your own workplace and have a memo sent, or if you like, copy this and post it to the bathroom stall door. Let's ask the important question, why do you feel the need to leave your disgusting bodily fluids behind for someone else to clean up?  Keep in mind when using the workplace restroom or public restroom, that you are not the only person using it and it is your responsibility to clean up after yourself.  You are not 4 years old anymore and your mommy isn't going to follow you everywhere to wipe your ass for you.
