Subnosys
Sydney band Subnosys are "heavy alternative". Whatever that means...
Disparity. It’s evident in the influences of the band members: extreme metal, modern metal, funk, dark ambient... It's all thrown into a pot to produce something that sounds nothing like any of it's parts. At times a dark rhythmic weight; crushing and metallic. At others, weightless, morose and melancholy. It's layered and intricate but also takes time to explore the space between.
Subnosys are a patient band. They've had to be. It's taken some time to hone their sound and it's taken time to find the right personnel. It started with Dave, John and Lachlan in autumn of 2006 - their previous ventures planting the Subnosys seed. The three worked on their catalogue while keeping their eye out for a vocalist. In October of 2006, Subnosys was lucky enough to find Ian to front the band and give the songs context and direction. His vocals… at times introspective; alternatively soaring. At others, blood and bile.
While working with Ian, the focus shifted to find a bassist and once again with patience and a little luck, Subnosys was rewarded with Mat who was exactly the bassist they were looking for. He added intricacy and fluidity to the songs that Subnosys, up to that point had not even hinted.
Mat scrambled to learn the set weeks before Subnosys debuted at Sydney's Abduction-X night club, followed by subsequent shows at Club Blink and Utopia Records. To fuel the buzz, the band put together the October demo which spent weeks in the top 25 Unearthed metal charts.
The winter of 2008 saw Lachlan relinquish his seat at the Subnosys round table, so the quest to find a suitable replacement was on...
Yeah, Subnosys are patient; but it's been this patience, unwillingness to compromise and settle for less that has produced a strong musical collective with a will and sound that is wholly their own.
