Bloodstock Update

Bloodstock Open Air Metalfest has finished. It's 4.30am and I'm not long home, tired, voiceless and aching after a successful festival all round. Live shots, reviews, round ups and faces of Bloodstockers will be uploaded over the next few days.

if you were there and met Seppo the Duck aka "Metal Duck" (as seen on main stage and around the festival) post a comment.

If you were photographed by us there, leave a comment when you find yourself in the gallery, or just to say hi.

Keep watching the blogs for new Bloodstock uploads and UK Live events.

Bloodstock Day 2 ... Part 2

Continued .. read part 1 first

I may have got the oddest picture in a photo pit when I went to pick up my kit on the way out, as nonchalantly hopping past the speaker stacks, which vibrated hard enough to spill one photographer’s beer, and off under the stage was a frog (toad?) I couldn’t decide whether to photograph it or trig it, but it was a bit small and probably wouldn’t have signed up for a profile anyway.

I met possibly the only person more excitable and emotional than me about meeting her favourite band, as she sat grinning from ear to ear while I was out meeting the masses.

And then I met Trig – The Next Generation, who didn’t seem at all moved by folk metal, Viking or not.

The legs below belong to someone I actually met on a plane from Amsterdam to Hamburg on the way to Wacken (small world eh). I wanted to Trig them but had only cards not stickers …aarrrggh!

On the way through backstage to go and shoot Epica, I bumped into Cristina (Lacuna Coil) and took a shot of her with the infamous Bloodstock painting, by festival organiser, metal maniac and artist, Paul Gregory. He paints a new one for each festival and it’s signed by the bands throughout the day.

So then, front and centre for Epica's set.

Then after signing the painting and doing a couple of band shots, they faced the huge queue of fans waiting to get stuff signed and I dragged a Roman off to the Trig banner for a pic. One of the great things about this festival is the public signing sessions, which sometimes last for hours and go down so well with the fans of course!

Nevermore’s set managed to kick off the best mosh pit I’d seen so far, which I also grabbed a minute or two of on video (videos will be uploaded to view shortly).

Final band I caught on camera today was headliners Lacuna Coil, who played out a great finish to the first full day of Bloodstock.

After seeing off the Wolf, I finally gathered up the weekend lodgers and headed for home, fully intending to sleep. But sleep is for wimps .. and THIS IS METAL!!

Bloodstock Day 2 ... Part 1

So, another festival day bites the dust, and with the sun shining pretty much all day, I can vouch for the dust! Not that I’m complaining as I sit here with the sun rising on the final day, because it’s been raining overnight, as predicted so we’re not so much in for a day of metal as mud.

First person I spoke to today, as I tied the Trig banner to the fence between the signing tent and the busy Terrorizer magazine stand (it’s all about visibility folks), was Luke Bell, the singer from Panic Cell (check out their profile). Panic Cell had their new album “What Doesn’t Kill Us” reviewed in today’s (Friday) copy of The Sun newspaper, no small achievement, and as I had a copy I caught Luke’s reaction to reading it for the first time.

First band I caught today was Scar Symmetry, and they sounded great.

Bands will be properly reviewed later (with more shots going in the gallery) by me and new Trigger Bruce, a walking encyclopaedia of musical knowledge, who is staying at Festival Central (aka my house) this weekend.

I was really looking forward to seeing Wolf play, and they kicked off really well… until guitarist, Johannes “Axeman” Losback started having sound problems … and then the sound went altogether. It’s a festival, it’s live, these things happen right? They came back on … and the sound went again (I’m having flashbacks to another recent gig here and wondering if maybe I kicked a plug out while I was on stage this time?).
These things DO happen, but it took an absolute age to get things sorted out. Instead of pitching a fit, the band pitched cans of beer out to the fans who were chanting “Wolf. Wolf ,Wolf” (ok I did instigate that at least once to grab a video on my cell phone). It’s never easy for a band to maintain momentum when they have to stop and start their set, and to keep the crowd of probably still drunk metal heads happy, but these guys did. They talked, screamed and taunted the crowd, partially stripped, went along the barrier pouring beer down the eager throats of the fans and Johannes even gave them a drum solo. He also said a brief hello to Trigland for my cell phone video (new kit required maybe?).

When the technical hitches and glitches were finally sorted (or as the crew announced afterwards, all the gremlins had been exterminated) Wolf played a blinder as if nothing had happened, with band and crowd as energetic as each other. Lacuna Coil may have been headlining, but Wolf were the stars of the day, hence the well deserved mention.

Yep, I met up with the guys backstage and have trigged them up, so hopefully we’ll see them on here soon.

Thankfully Korpiklaani didn’t suffer the same sound issues and the crowd went mental for the Viking folk metal band.

Continued in part 2

Bloodstock Day 1

We arrived at Bloodstock Open Air slightly later than expected having been stopped at the entrance to Catton Hall to allow ambulance access.
The metallers were out in force, despite the weather looking a bit dodgy all day (who cares about the weather eh ... it's METAL!).
After sorting passes and checking out the general layout I caught the great set from Finnish band Kiaus.

Bloodstockers were more than eager to hear about Trig and of course pose for shots, before I legged it to the pit for Reading (UK) based band Head On, leaving my colleagues holding my dinner, with the words "Oh crap I was supposed to shoot these guys" (which is a bit of a trademark phrase when I'm shooting)

Next up were Firewind, who were also awesome but caused us all some head scratching as Henning Basse was fronting for them with shorter hair than we're used to, so as we finally clicked to who it was you could probably hear the collective penny drop from wherever you are!

As it got later and darker I discovered some flash problems with the camera (oh deep joy) but didn't let that hamper getting shots of the clammering front row fans who wanted their pictures taken and to chat to me (yeah I'm a bit well known at Bloodstock so they all got TRRRRRRIGGED.) Editor of Powerplay magazine, Mark Hoaksey was in the pit with me and snapped me handing out the cards while we waited for the mighty Testament to take to the stage.

Testament delighted their fans as last band of the day with a great set.

It's a short round up of a successful first day at Bloodstock Open Air, as Festival Central (aka my house is buzzing with the preparations for another day of metal while the sun is shining (FOR NOW!)
