No Conformity Co, or NoCo for short, was created with the mission of developing weightlifting and strength training gear. In addition to addressing long-standing issues with current products on the market, NoCo seeks to elevate the quality, fit, and style of strength gear to levels normally reserved for premium sneakers and activewear. What started as an endeavor to expand the utility of a celebrated piece of equipment has grown into a multifaceted collaboration with Trig, resulting in a full line of category-defying weightlifting products. Additionally, NoCo tasked Trig with creating a strategy around its physical and digital experience.

Challenge

“Spotting” and supporting the brand

Trig worked closely with Andrew Riad, proprietor of NoCo, who engaged the team in the development of a new brand identity and digital experience. The main challenges for the strategists and designers were positioning NoCo as a brand that stands out in the fitness world, a saturated market where it can be difficult to emerge from the crowd. We embarked on designing and developing a custom ecommerce platform that breaks out of conventional standards while still allowing for a responsive and navigable experience. This is especially important as consumers continue to transition to mobile and social platforms, embracing digital commerce technologies.

Approach

Getting support in all the right places

Working with NoCo and Andrew Riad, NoCo we created a Brand Identity Development Strategy, designed and developed a database driven website, and created additional digital and print assets. Trig began our journey with NoCo by completing a competitive brand analysis where we explored contemporaries in the field to determine the environment in which the brand would live.

Through our Competitive Analysis Process, and with insight from the client, we were able to help guide NoCo to choose a Brand Archetype that was able to support the core of its mission: An Outlaw. Outlaw archetypes are known to question the status quo and break the rules to elevate. That expression allowed Trig to consult the client on vital steps of bringing NoCo to life, such as company name, purpose/vision, and visual brand language and elements. While Trig did not complete the final graphic identity, we did provide assistance in choosing a final logo and wordmark provided by other designers.

Over the last 6 years, Trig helped me successfully bring my product vision to reality on a variety of development projects. At all times, I found the Trig team to be professional, responsive, constantly improving and always willing to take on new challenges. The Trig team doesn’t shy away from challenging projects but takes them on with confidence. I’ve had several instances where I’ve hit hurdles during the development process but was always able to benefit from the team’s outside-the-box perspective and creative solutions to overcome those hurdles.

Result

Nothing ventured, nothing gained

The NoCo brand boldly defies the competition with a product line that goes outside the perceived boundaries of what weightlifting products should be. Trig and NoCo's founder actively collaborated to develop products that are innovative and versatile, reduced in weight and bulk and multi-functional—eliminating the need for equipment for each and every exercise and minimizing the gear in a typical gym bag. The product line’s functional improvement is additionally enhanced by the brand’s aesthetic and the application of thoughtful visual design details and graphics that further solidify NoCo’s bold stance in the physical and virtual world.

Solution

A new paradigm for lifting gear

After establishing an Archetype and assisting with the selection of a logo and wordmark we re-engaged with NoCo to being work on a digital ecommerce solution that would serve as a platform for the sale of physical products. By developing a style board we captured the essence of the archetype and also served as a north star for how we would set the tone and create assets for all digital or print materials. The use of strong, bold colors, authentic imagery, and elements from the physical product were incorporated in the board to augment and elevate the product development and design that was being developed by our industrial design team.

With the selection of a styleboard we re-engaged with NoCo to begin work on a new website. By establishing a site architecture that captured the important journey consumers take from landing to checkout, we created a low fidelity mockup that was then finalized with content based on the chosen archetype and styleboards before beginning the website build.

The database driven site was developed based on the high fidelity prototype created with Adobe XD. The NoCo brand appears across a variety of digital and physical spaces. To accommodate this varied landscape we also created print and social media assets. In order to keep the process moving forward, Trig provided a detailed art direction packet.

During our work with NoCo the world experienced something unseen in recent history, a quickly moving, airborne global pandemic. While Trig, as a firmly established virtual company, was well prepared to roll with the punches, it was an adjustment for the rest of the world. This global shift in operations did delay some of our work with NoCo but we were ultimately able to complete the project to the clients' delight and satisfaction.
